A number of European political figures have welcomed Spain's recognition of the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco as the most serious, realistic and credible solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, calling on other European countries to follow suit.

Spanish government's support to Morocco's Autonomy Plan for the Sahara, as being "the most serious, realistic and credible basis" for the settlement of the artificial conflict over the Moroccan Sahara, "falls within the framework of the UN", said Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, on Thursday.

By supporting the autonomy initiative in the Moroccan Sahara, as "the most serious, realistic and credible basis", Spain has adopted a "strategic and courageous" decision to build a "stable, solid, perennial and transparent" relationship with Morocco, underline Spanish media.

The Chioukhs of the Sahrawi tribes of the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region welcomed the new positive position of Spain supporting the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative in the Moroccan Sahara.

The message sent to HM King Mohammed VI by the President of the Spanish government, Pedro Sanchez, is "judicious to establish a relationship of trust and sincerity" between Morocco and Spain, stressed, Saturday, the former head of the Spanish government, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.
