France’s support to Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara is a “true diplomatic turning point,” said French Institute for International and Strategic Affairs (IRIS) director, Pascal Boniface.

Following French President Emmanuel Macron's decision to support Morocco's sovereignty over its Sahara, Finland on Tuesday became the first Nordic country to back the autonomy plan presented by the Kingdom, writes the French daily "Les Echos".

In the context of the French Republic President Emmanuel Macron's announcement of France's support for Moroccan sovereignty over its Sahara, French Minister of Culture Rachida Dati welcomed "a historic day for Franco-Moroccan relations".

France's new position in support of Morocco's sovereignty over its Sahara will have a major impact on the way the issue is handled by the UN Security Council, says Mohammed Loulichki, Senior Fellow at the think tank Policy Center for the New South (PCNS).
