The Algerian government let worst case policy flourish in Tindouf camps

"Polisario", convinced of collusion and complicity with the terrorist group Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), as evidenced by the kidnapping of Western citizens in the heart of Tindouf, turned into "back up "of the war declared by AQIM and the "Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (Mujao).

This warning was launched Monday by Yonah Alexander, Director of the Center for International Studies against Terrorism (ICTS), under the Potomac Institute in Washington.

The information relayed on the same day by the international media about rallying dozens of members of the Polisario to join Mujao in northern Mali "is a logical result of Polisario’s radicalization and exacerbation of living conditions in the Tindouf camps, where people are held against their will by the Polisario militia," said Mr. Alexander in an interview with the MAP, urging the international community " to assume responsibility in front of threats posed by separatism and terrorism against the stability and security of the Maghreb and the Sahel. "

Ai the time when the international community "focuses on the Syrian conflict, AQIM and Mujao declared war against the West with the Polisario as a partner," said Mr. Alexander, who is the author of several reference articles on terrorism in North Africa and the Sahel region.

"The international community cannot afford to stand idly while this region is becoming a heaven for extremist forces that promise fire and blood in this part of the world."

These latest developments "leave no doubt as to the escalation and radicalization of terrorist groups in the region, as evidenced by the situation in northern Mali," he added.

"Polisario" Separatists and the terrorist group Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb are two partners of a destabilizing alliance for the region of the Maghreb and the Sahel, said, Peter Pham, Director of the Michael Ansari for Africa, under the U.S. Think Tank Atlantic Council.

"This is a situation where converge militarily trained separatists and AQIM extremist militants, both driven by pragmatic considerations to achieve their own ends. The situation in northern Mali is a perfect illustration » " he explained in an interview with the MAP.

This situation, he said, exacerbates the humanitarian situation and human rights in the Tindouf camps, in violation of international conventions "to the extent that today we can talk of generational misery in the south-western Algeria, without any economic or political opportunity.»

«We have here the makings of a potentially explosive situation in the region," warned Mr. Pham, who is often called by the Congress of the United States in the context of hearings on security in Africa in general and in the Maghreb and the Sahel in particular.

In this context, the American expert pointed to "the responsibility of the Algerian government which let prosper worst case policy in the Tindouf camps."

" Separatists believe they can use extremists to achieve their own ends, but ultimately, to serve as lackeys reflected by the alliance of convenience between the Tuareg and radical Islamists in northern Mali," he added.
